Our History

Developed by founder and architect Suzanne Morgan, Sacred Space International (SSI) began in 1999 with an interfaith prayer space in downtown Chicago called the Upper Room. Prompted by the subsequent climate of religious and cultural misunderstanding after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Suzanne launched the Center for Religious Architecture, later renamed Sacred Space International. Today, Sacred Space International is expanding its programmatic reach nationally and internationally, to explore the architectural meaning of sacred space in service to interreligious community building in an increasingly globalized world.
